I’ve been refurbishing consoles from the inside by cleaning and recapping as seen in my posts and Youtube videos. It is a top priority at this point due to many reasons mentioned in those guides, but I also wanted to do something on the outside.
In this guide, I will show how to do scratch removal and then put protection layer on retro consoles (works for everything else), which is a final step in the journey of refurbishing and maintaining your console setup.
Tools needed
We need a couple of products which can serve you for a very long time and well worth the money, here is the full list:
NOVUS-PK1-8 scratch remover: it is the main product to be used now, it has 3 parts: part 1 is for shining and cleaning, part 2 is for fine scratches removal, and part 3 is for heavy scratch removal.
Microfiber cloth: it is used with all products to wipe and buff the consoles.
Suede cloths: they are an alternative to microfiber cloths. I feel they are very smooth and can be good for certain areas.
Turtle wax hybrid solutions ceramic spray: the final step in the process, it is doing a thin protection layer which prevents future scratches and make shining look last longer.

General process
The video is essential in this particular guide, so please watch it first. However, here is the written steps:
1- Do a general cleaning stage, like using IPA and a clean cloth to remove dust and all sorts of stuff which sticks to the plastic surface.
2- Use Novos part 1 on the entire console. This is an essential step, always Novos part 1 must be used first. Either spray it on the console and wipe with the cloth, or spray it on the cloth then wipe. Make sure it covers all areas.
3- If the console has heavy scratches, you should start with them first then move to small scratches. For heavy scratches, use Novos part 3 by pouring it on the area which has the scratches then wipe thoroughly in circular motion. Keep going for it until you think it can’t be fixed more. You would need to put more of it in each step and I recommend putting part 1 between each stage.
4- Now move to minor or small scratches by using part 2 the same way as previous step.
5- After finishing all scratches when you decide that this is the best result you could get, use Novos part 1 again as a final step. Let it be there for 2 minutes.
6- Use the ceramic spray with a new cloth on the entire console, do it twice to make sure it fully coats the surface. Leave it for tomorrow and it will be done.
Final thoughts
After I went into this for 3 consoles during that video, I fully recommend it. I mean, very cheap price and simple process to enhance the look and feel of my beloved consoles and give them protection, it should be a standard procedure in retro gaming and I hope this guide and video kick start that.
